Man dies as sex crimes officers search house west of Sydney

Police have launched an investigation after a man took his own life as officers were searching a home in the Blue Mountains.

Officers from the Sex Crimes Squad and Riot Squad went to a house on Grose Road in Leura, west of Sydney, at about 7am on Tuesday.

Shortly after they went into the house, a 41-year-old man was found inside a bedroom with a knife.

As officers went into the room, the man stabbed himself.

Police immediately offered first aid and were assisted by paramedics, but the man died at the scene.

As the man died during a police search warrant, a critical incident investigation has been launched, with a team from Mount Druitt Police leading an independent investigation into the man’s death.

A report will also be prepared for the coroner, and the investigation will be subject of an independent review by the Professional Standards Command and overseen by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.

Leura is a popular tourist spot for people visiting the Blue Mountains, with people venturing to the bush walks and lookouts in the National Park, as well as visiting the picturesque town centre.

Grose Street is close to Leura Mall, the main thoroughfare in the town.
