A second driver and a passenger were taken to hospital in an unknown condition.

The fatality follows the death of a female pedestrian hit by a car in the Newcastle suburb of Wallsend.

The 21-year-old was walking along Minmi Road after 11pm on Thursday with two friends when she and one of the men were struck by a car travelling in the same direction.

She was taken to John Hunter Hospital with serious head injuries and later died. The male pedestrian received a minor leg injury and did not require treatment.

The 18-year-old male driver is assisting police with their investigations.
