A driver has been critically injured after being hit by a kangaroo in a freak accident near Lithgow in NSW.

About 7.20pm on Friday, a Holden Commodore travelling on Pipers Flat Road hit a kangaroo, sending it flying into the windscreen of a Ford Falcon ute approaching from the opposite direction.

The ute driver, a 32-year-old man, lost control and hit the guard rails. He suffered serious head and facial injuries and has been airlifted to Westmead Hospital in a critical condition. The Holden driver, a 19-year-old man, and two female passengers were uninjured.
