Man charged after Sydney police pursuit

A man who tried to escape a random breath test before crashing his car in Sydney's west was a disqualified driver, police say.

Officers said they tried to stop the 33-year-old man for a random breath test on Bunnerong Road in Pagewood when he fled in his Silver Hyundai.

They say the car was speeding over the limit through Pagewood and Eastlakes before it crashed into a steel fence on the median strip of Gardeners Road in Eastlakes.

The driver then ran from the car and was chased by police to the fence of a nearby golf course where he allegedly picked up a stick and threatened to assault the officers.

Police used a Taser to subdue and arrest the man before taking him to Prince of Wales Hospital for blood and urine tests.

During a search of the car they said they found cash and amounts of the prohibited drug gamma-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB).

The man, from Randwick, was taken to Waverley Police Station where he was charged with police pursuit (Skye's Law), assaulting police, resisting police as well as numerous drug and driving offences.

He was refused bail to appear in Central Local Court on Wednesday.
