Man charged after drunken assault rampage

A man is due to appear in court after he went on an alleged drunken rampage in Newcastle, assaulting at least three strangers and a police officer.

On Wednesday afternoon the man, 24, left a Charlestown licensed premises and began allegedly assaulting two unknown bystanders, before punching another man, who was in his car as he waited at a traffic light.

Several people then intervened and restrained the man until police arrived, who had to use OC spray to subdue him.

He was taken to the station where he then allegedly assaulted a police officer, before he was charged with several offences and is due to appear in court on Thursday.
