A man has been charged after he armed himself with a sword at a shopping centre in southwest Sydney and struggled with police who tried to disarm him.

Officers were speaking to two women who had allegedly been in an altercation at the Queen Street centre in Campbelltown on Sunday afternoon when the armed man approached them.

During a short struggle, the man, aged 25, was disarmed and one of the women, also aged 25, allegedly assaulted a police officer.

She has been charged with affray, assaulting police and hindering police and was granted conditional bail ahead of an expected appearance at Campbelltown Local Court next month.

The man was charged with carrying a weapon in a public place, assaulting police and resisting arrest. He was refused bail and is due to appear at Campbelltown Local Court on Tuesday.
