Man admits gun offences after raid

A Sydney man whose home was raided by counter-terrorism police last year has admitted to a string of gun offences.

NSW Police and Australian Federal Police officers swooped on 22-year-old Jibryl Almaouie as he was walking to his car in a Bankstown shopping centre, in southwest Sydney, on December 18, court documents show.

A police statement of facts tendered in court on Wednesday alleges Almaouie told the officers he had spent the previous night in Wiley Park but surveillance put him at his mother's home in Condell Park.

When police searched the brick-veneer townhouse later that afternoon they found a cache of weapons and ammunition wrapped in pillowcases and bits of floral fabric. These were stored at the back of a wardrobe, hidden in the lining of a suitcase and taped up inside a locked filing cabinet.

The weapons included a .303 Bolt-Action rifle with a loaded magazine, a disassembled 12-gauge shotgun and a sawn-off shotgun. Police also discovered a shoulder belt loaded with live ammunition.

Burwood Local Court on Wednesday heard Almaouie had admitted to a number of possession charges, and that prosecutors had agreed to withdraw a charge relating to the unsafe storage of a firearm as part of a plea deal.

Almouie will face sentencing proceedings in the Downing Centre District Court on November 6.
