A learner driver has been charged after he allegedly led police on a pursuit in an Audi TT on a highway in rural NSW.

Police allege the 29-year-old man from Victoria initially stopped for police about 2.15pm on Friday on the Hume Highway south of Gundagai, in NSW's southeast, but then accelerated away.

A pursuit was initiated then later terminated for safety reasons, until the man was spotted again south of Holbrook.

He allegedly fled on foot once the Audi became bogged and was caught by police, who charged him with numerous offences including dangerous driving, not displaying L plates and learner driver not accompanied.

He was refused bail and is set to face Albury Local Court on Monday.

Police thanked truck drivers in the area for helping them throughout the pursuit.
