Knox to drop Paterson's name from centre

Knox Grammar School plans to rename the Paterson Centre for Ethics and Business Studies, the current headmaster of the school has announced.

The school that Ian Paterson developed no longer exists, John Weeks said.

Mr Weeks was speaking outside the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse on Friday at the end of a two-week hearing into the boys school at Wahroonga on Sydney's north shore.

In sometimes startling evidence it was revealed during the hearing that sex abuse went unchecked at the school during Dr Paterson's 30 years there.

Mr Weeks said the school had undergone a transformation since Dr Paterson's time.

"That school does not exist anymore," he said.

Dr Weeks said the school council would be issuing a statement on Friday about a plan to rename the ethics centre.

"We sadly cannot allow that name to stay on," he said.

He said the school had "canvassed with old boys, we have canvassed with current families" and the name can't remain.

There had been an online petition to rename the centre.

The school has also removed a memorial plaque on school gates to another teacher who was a known among boys as a serial sex molester.
