'Kenny-Dowall's ex asked Roosters for money before making domestic violence allegations': court

The daughter of Labor Senator Nova Peris allegedly asked the Sydney Roosters for money before making domestic violence allegations against her then boyfriend who was one of the stars at the NRL club, a court has heard.

Shaun Kenny-Dowall's lawyer made the claim at the Downing Centre Local Court yesterday, The Daily Telegraph reports.

The New Zealand footballer has pleaded not guilty to 11 charges including assault occasioning actual bodily harm and six counts of common assault against his former girlfriend, sprinter Jessica Peris.

The footballer was also charged with stalking, harassment and ­destroying property.

Kenny-Dowall's lawyer Chris Murphy said that after the couple separated Ms Peris approached the Roosters and demanded money.

He said that a month later she told police that Kenny-Dowall had attacked her seven times between October 2014 and June 2015.

Mr Murphy told the court the only injury Ms Peris suffered was a bruise on her arm, which she had told a friend was caused by dropping a weight while training.

He also said that the former couple had exchanged thousands of text messages but Ms Peris had not complained of violence or Kenny-Dowall threatening her in a single one.

"Let's get this case finished and get him back on the footy field," Mr Murphy said.

The matter was set down for a hearing later this month.
