Curious swimming kangaroo sends 30,000L of water gushing down Wagga driveway

A kangaroo keen for an early morning swim had to be rescued by police officers after it found its way into a backyard pool and sent 30,000 litres of water gushing down a driveway.

Paul Harris of Tolland, a suburb of Wagga in New South Wales, discovered the kangaroo in his pool after he heard a loud crash outside.

“I see this kangaroo's head in the pool just pop up. I thought oh my god you have got to be joking,” Mr Harris told 9NEWS.

“It was a good swimmer; I think it was a Thorpe kangaroo myself.”

He attempted to save the animal himself but had to call in several officers who lassoed it with some rope and pulled it to safety.

The officers then carried the kangaroo into the back of a paddy wagon before taking it to a local vet for a check-up.

Mr Harris and his fellow residents are puzzled about how the kangaroo came to be in the pool as the area is mostly residential.

During its ordeal the kangaroo scratched the lining of the pool causing massive leaking.

The animal was unharmed.

“When we go up to the scrub I will say oh there is that roo that jumped into the pool!” Mr Harris joked.
