Mother of Irishman wants son back in arms

The mother of an Irish man left in a critical but stable condition in a Sydney hospital after he was assaulted says she wants her son back in her arms.

Jason Cierans, 29, has been in St Vincent's Hospital since he was allegedly attacked by two men in Sydney's east in the early hours of Saturday.

Flanked by her partner Declan and other family, Jason's mother Stephanie described her son as brilliant.

"I need him to get well and come home to me," she told reporters in Sydney.

"I want him back in my arms. I want to kiss and hug him."

Two men have been charged over the brawl.

Argentinian national Adrian Martinez, 30, was charged with causing grievous bodily harm.

He appeared in Central Local Court on Thursday and was granted bail with the matter due to return to Waverley Local Court on October 22.

The 27-year-old has been charged with affray.

He was granted bail and will face Waverley Local Court next month.

Ms Cierans, who has travelled from Ireland to be by her son's side, said Jason was a loving, funny, happy-go-lucky man who started work immediately when he arrived Down Under.

She said her son, who worked in construction, has been in Australia for six years and has never missed a day of work.

Ms Cierans said his large group of Australian friends had become family.

Jason thought of Sydney as home and his native Ireland as a holiday, she said.

"I can't be any prouder of my son," she said.

"Any parent whose son or daughter lives abroad has this fear when the door knocks late at night.

"Our world turned upside down on Friday night."

Jason remains in an induced coma in a critical but stable condition.
