Indigenous referendum would pass: poll

Nearly two out of three voters would vote in favour of recognising indigenous Australians in the constitution, a new opinion poll shows.

A Newspoll of 1722 people conducted last weekend shows 63 per cent support constitutional recognition, while 19 per cent oppose it and 18 per cent are uncommitted.

Support for the change in the nation's founding document is strongest among Greens and Labor voters, while 54 per cent of coalition voters are also in favour, the poll published in the Weekend Australian revealed.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott and Opposition Leader Bill Shorten will meet with indigenous leaders on July 6 to discuss the best model for a 2017 referendum on indigenous recognition.
