A man is behind bars accused of stealing items from a Sydney apartment after the tenant climbed over the balcony and impaled himself.

Abdul Tabbaa was refused bail on Thursday accused of stealing property from a home in Surry Hills on November 4.

He's due to face Central Local Court via audio visual link on Monday.

Detectives earlier in November said they suspected a Swedish-American IT worker climb over the balcony of the inner Sydney apartment, fell three floors and impaled himself on a table leg.

That incident was possibly witnessed by the man's date, who then was seen leaving the apartment with a Louis Vuitton bag, police said.

The injured man appeared to climb over the rail of his own volition but police were puzzled why he made the potentially life-threatening decision while his date was still in the unit.
