The identity of a young woman whose naked body was found floating face down in a blow hole on the NSW Central Coast is being confirmed by DNA testing.

The young Asian woman, believed to be aged between 20 and 35, was discovered by a tourist in the water at Snapper Point in the Munmorah State Conservation Area on Sunday morning.

A post-mortem examination revealed the woman was stabbed numerous times before her death.

Forensic scientists are comparing a DNA sample from the body to a DNA sample from a missing person, a police spokeswoman said on Thursday.

"Hopefully today or tomorrow they'll confirm the identity from DNA testing," she told AAP.

"Then they will have to notify the family."

Police released a computer-generated image of the young woman on Wednesday in the hope that someone could help identify her.
