Human remains have been discovered off the coast of Wollongong, with police believing they belong to a rock fisherman who went missing last month.

A recreational diver spotted the remains underwater near Red Point at Point Kembla yesterday afternoon and alerted police, who located them soon after.

Police believe the remains are those of 66-year-old rock fisherman Van Hai Tran who hasn't been seen since going fishing in Port Kembla on August 26.

His vehicle was found in a beachside car park in Port Kembla.

An air and water search failed to find any sign of the man.

Police at the scene. 9News
