State funeral for Phillip Hughes called off, Mike Baird says

A state funeral for cricketer Phillip Hughes has been called off.

The 25-year-old died two weeks ago when he was struck in the head with a cricket ball during a Sheffield Shield match.

NSW Premier Mike Baird said the planned state funeral was called off following consultation with Cricket Australia and the Hughes family.

"All parties felt that given the enormous outpouring of support at last Wednesday's funeral, that a State Memorial Service would no longer need to be held," Mr Baird said in a statement.

Hughes was buried last week in his home town of Macksville, on the NSW mid-north coast - an event attended by thousands and watched live by millions of Australians.

A short ceremony will be held to remember Hughes at the Sydney Cricket Ground prior to the start of the fourth Test between Australia and India on January 6.
