The new units have been dubbed 'Supermax on wheels'. (9NEWS)

The most dangerous prisoners in NSW will now be transported in two custom-built armoured vehicles boasting ballistic protection and satellite technology.

The units, which cost $150,000 each, will be driven by specially-trained officers and used to move high-risk prisoners and accused or jailed terrorists who pose a threat to national security.

Dubbed 'Supermax on wheels', the vehicles will replace older models that do not boast the same technology, Minister for Corrections David Elliott said.

"(It's) just one of a range of measures to ensure the effective management of the risk presented by these offenders," he said in a statement.

NSW Corrections Commissioner Peter Severin said extensive security planning was undertaken before any transportation, including a search of the prisoners.

"This process is about ensuring community safety and security throughout the journey to and from the centre," he said.
