Hay makes way amid police investigation

The NSW Labor caucus will elect a new whip after Wollongong MP Noreen Hay stood down from the position amid a police investigation into alleged electoral fraud.

Opposition Leader Luke Foley accepted Ms Hay's offer to step down on Friday, two days after her electoral office was raided by federal police.

The raid came eight months after the Australian Electoral Commission referred allegations of enrolment fraud to the AFP.

That referral, on December 8, came two days after Ms Hay won nomination for her seat in a tight pre-selection battle.

In a brief statement on Friday, Ms Hay pledged to continue to assist with the investigation.

"As the matter is subject to a police investigation, I cannot comment further," she said.

The Labor caucus is expected to elect her replacement before parliament sits again in early August.
