Harriet Wran could taste freedom in weeks

Harriet Wran could walk free from a Sydney jail within weeks after she was sentenced over her role in a deadly ice-fuelled robbery.

The 28-year-old was given a two-year minimum jail term sentence in the NSW Supreme Court on Tuesday for accessory after the fact of murder and robbery in company.

Justice Ian Harrison also handed Wran a one-year fixed term of imprisonment for "harbouring, maintaining and assisting" heroin addict Michael Lee in the days after he murdered small-time drug dealer Daniel McNulty in a housing commission unit two years ago.

Wran, the daughter of former NSW premier Neville Wran, has been behind bars since August 13, 2014, meaning she will become eligible for parole in just over a fortnight.

At the time of Mr McNulty's death on August 10, 2014, Wran admitted she was injecting ice and had spent years in and out of rehab centres trying to overcome her struggles with drugs, depression, anxiety and bulimia.

Justice Harrison on Tuesday said he accepted Wran was genuinely remorseful about the deadly robbery.

He also warned that privilege was no shield against drug addiction.

"Every family in Australia today is a potential target for direct and vicarious disruption and sadness caused by crimes related to illicit drugs," the judge said.

"The combination of mental illness and drug addiction do not in my experience respond well to either punishment or logic."

Wran's full sentence will expire in August 2018.
