People in wheelchairs will be able to use the Sydney Harbour Bridge walkway as the NSW government pledges $10 million for two access lifts.

The lifts, at either end of the bridge in Kirribilli and The Rocks, will provide an alternative to staircases with more than 60 steps.

"These changes would mean there are no constraints for people with prams, the elderly or for those in a wheelchair," Minister for Roads Duncan Gay said on Sunday.

Construction is expected to begin in about a year.
