A man has allegedly pointed a gun at police who were trying to present him with a firearm ban outside a Sydney unit.

The officers drew their guns to challenge the 24-year-old, who quickly retreated back into his Banksia unit on Thursday afternoon.

Police negotiated with the man for a short time before he surrendered. He had allegedly hurled the gun from his balcony into a neighbouring property.

A 28-year-old woman was also arrested inside the unit and charged with hindering police and having keys belonging to a stolen vehicle.
