Gun laws do nothing: Leyonhjelm

Senator David Leyonhjelm says Australia is a "nation of victims" and has deemed gun laws irrelevant in an interview with the US National Rifle Association (NRA).

The Liberal Democrat said in a video uploaded by the NRA that the black market had rendered gun restrictions irrelevant and called Australia "a defenceless country" adding "he loves the NRA".

"The criminals still have plenty of guns... it's really not made the slightest bit of difference. If you want a gun you can get one," Senator Leyonhjelm said.

National crime statistics show gun-related deaths in Australia have declined since the 1996 National Firearm Agreement, from 618 in 1991 to 226 in 2012.
