Guards strike at NSW Goulburn Prison

Correctional officers have walked off the job at a NSW prison after inmates refused to follow their orders.

The Public Services Association (PSA) says about 120 staff are striking for 24 hours after seizures of mobile phones, drugs and televisions that had been tampered with prompted inmates to revolt.

Inmates then negotiated with management to have items returned, PSA Prison Officers Vocational Branch chairman Steve McMahon told ABC.

"The staff feel those actions have placed them at a great risk because the inmates now have managed to manipulate the system and had their items returned," he said.

Inmates are being kept in their cells and visits have been cancelled during the strike.

Assistant Commissioner for Custodial Corrections Kevin Corcoran told ABC the prison would remain secure.

Union members are expected to meet at 8am on Sunday to review the industrial action.
