Greyhound scandal may boost NSW votes

Australian 70s starlet Lynda Stoner is hoping a backlash to greyhound racing's live baiting scandal will boost the Animal Justice Party chances at the March poll.

Ms Stoner, who is running for the Upper House along with Mark Pearson, says the party will push for a ban on greyhound racing, along with other forms of animal cruelty.

"That's just one in a long list of animal cruelty practices, including puppy farms and battery chicken cages," Ms Stoner told AAP in Sydney on Wednesday.

"Public awareness is growing and becoming less comfortable with these sorts of things."

Despite the party's low public profile, Ms Stoner says there is a good chance Mr Pearson will be elected to the Upper House.

"People have a very warm feeling toward this party," she said.

"Many are pleased to have such a compassionate party who is speaking out for all species."

A major investigation into NSW's greyhound racing industry was launched last month by the Baird government after TV footage aired on ABC's Four Corners showing trainers using live bait to blood greyhounds.

The board of Greyhound Racing NSW was formally disbanded by NSW Deputy Premier Troy Grant as a consequence.

The Greyhound Racing Victoria board resigned on Wednesday, despite not being found to have known about live animals being used to train greyhounds.
