A police operation is underway in the inner-Sydney suburb of Chippendale.

Emergency services are on the scene and have evacuated the NSW Corrections and the Transport for NSW buildings on Lee Street.

The Department of Immigration and Border Protection has also been evacuated.

One of two northbound lanes on Lee Street has been closed, and motorists are urged to reduce speed around the area.

NSW Police are investigating.

A NSW Police spokesman told 9news.com.au the buildings were evacuated “as a precaution” and the situation was “nothing serious”.

There are reports one person of interest has been taken into custody.
