Glen McNamara 'sorry' for Gao's death

After he was charged with Jamie Gao's murder, Glen McNamara confided to his daughter he was sorry for "a life wasted", but said he couldn't have remorse for something he didn't do, a court has heard.

Audio recordings of intercepted phone conversations between McNamara and his daughters were played to the jury at his and Roger Rogerson's Supreme Court murder trial in Sydney on Friday.

"I'm certainly sorry that he's dead ... I'm sorry for a life wasted ... but I can't have personal remorse because I didn't do anything to him," McNamara can be heard to tell one of his adult daughters in one of the conversations.

In the same conversation, McNamara goes on to say, "he was off his head on ice ... but I am sorry for the circumstances".

He then re-iterates his innocence.

"I'm sorry for his wasted life and his friends being upset but I didn't do anything."

Soon after, McNamara says: "Anyway, we'll just see what happens."

In another audio recording he is heard rubbishing the crown case to his daughter.

"I watched the news last night. They said it was a strong crown case," he says.

"It's crap. It's absolute crap."

He goes on to say, "my notes show I was doing a search", and, "there's three people in the world that know what happened and two of them are still here".

During the same conversation McNamara complains of "terrible dreams" and waking up with his heart "smashing".

But he reassures his daughter: "Don't worry about me. I'll be right".

McNamara and Rogerson have pleaded not guilty to murdering Mr Gao on May 20, 2014.

The crown case is the two men shot Mr Gao, an alleged drug dealer, before stuffing his body into a surfboard bag and dumping it at sea.

The trial is due to continue on Monday.
