Last night, police received a triple-0 call from a distressed motorist telling them she just hit a man who had been standing in the right-hand lane of the Hume Highway in the New South Wales Southern Highlands.

But an extensive search for the victim, both last night and this morning, revealed nothing.

The 44-year-old woman was driving on the highway  near Yerringbool at about 7pm when she says she hit a man. She immediately pulled over and called 000, a police spokesperson told the Sydney Morning Herald.

Police engaged helicopters and firefighters in the search as well, but came up with nothing. They called it off at 10:30pm last night.

They said the woman's mirror was damaged, consistent with her having hit something.

The woman may  have hit a kangaroo, they said after finding the body on one on the roadside.

They are asking people in the area to speak to family and friends and to contact them if any of their loved ones went missing that night.

The search will continue today.
