A ruptured gas main near the Sydney light rail project has caused part of the CBD to be shut down.

A 200-metre exclusion zone was put in place between George and Hunter streets in Sydney on Monday afternoon after the main ruptured.

Firefighters responded to the leak after 12.30pm, with the exclusion zone lifted before 2pm.
