Garbos race to rubbish domestic violence

A humble garbage truck has set a racing record in Sydney and sent an important message in the process.

Blacktown Mayor Stephen Bali joined Michelle Green from the Australian Racing Drivers' Club on Thursday morning as she took the wheel of a rubbish truck carrying the slogan: "There's no excuse for domestic violence. It's rubbish."

The truck is the latest addition to Blacktown's garbage collection fleet and will be on the road for White Ribbon Day on November 25.

However, its maiden journey took place not on suburban streets but at Sydney Motorsport Park at Eastern Creek, where it reached speeds of 110km/h on the straight.

"It was good fun," Mr Bali told AAP after the lap record attempt.

"It's never been raced before so whatever we got, I think that will be the record."

He described the truck as a "slow-moving billboard" that he hopes will raise awareness as it does the morning rounds around 110,000 homes.

"Hopefully it will start that conversation," he added.

Blacktown has one of the highest rates of recorded domestic violence in Sydney.
