Gang still at large after Bondi bashing

Three men who attacked a man with baseball bats in broad daylight at Sydney's Bondi Beach will be pursued and "put before the courts", police vow.

Witnesses say the trio were wielding baseball bats studded with nails when they set upon their 33-year-old victim, who was lounging in the sun at Biddigal Reserve about midday on Thursday.

"The description that was given of the men involved is Middle Eastern or Mediterranean men of solid build," Detective Inspector Tim Bayly told reporters on Friday.

The victim, named in media reports as Michael Nicholas, suffered a number of lacerations to his head and abrasions to his body.

Amateur video broadcast by the Seven Network shows a shirtless Mr Nicholas scrambling to avoid his attackers before being struck.

He's later seen lying on the pavement with blood streaming from his face.

He remained in St Vincent's Hospital and was scheduled to undergo surgery, a hospital spokesman told AAP on Friday afternoon.

The attack appeared premeditated with the trio fleeing on foot before possibly jumping into a car.

Lifeguard Bruce Hopkins told News Corp Australia the attackers arrived at North Bondi reserve in a white Mercedes.

Det Insp Bayly was unable to confirm the type of weapons used or reports the beating was over a woman with bikie links Mr Nicholas had been dating.

Detectives have spoken to a number of witnesses but won't reveal whether they included the woman seen with Ms Nicholas before he was attacked.

Det Insp Bayly said violence that sparked fear in the community wouldn't be tolerated.

"We will conduct a thorough investigation to identify the people involved and take action and put them before the courts," he said.
