Funding for NPWS firefighting helicopters

The National Parks and Wildlife Service has been gifted with two new firefighting helicopters as part of a $6.6 million state government funding boost.

The two new helicopters will be used in difficult and remote areas at high altitudes and temperatures and will carry heavy loads.

The boost, a bid for the NPWS to double its hazard reduction effort across the state, will be delivered over two years.

"We recognise the vital work our National Parks staff do in battling fires and we're investing in high-tech equipment to allow them to do this to the best of their ability," NSW Treasurer Dominic Perrottet said on Wednesday.

National Parks staff have, on average, undertaken 135,000 hectares of hazard reduction burning every year for the past five years, Environment Minister Gabrielle Upton said.

She says the new helicopters will play an "important part" in managing and controlling bush fire threats, including assisting aerial firefighting teams respond to fires surrounding Sydney.
