Funding for NSW farmers boosted by $30m

NSW farmers struggling to upgrade their worn-out tractors or rusty machinery are set to get most of the state government's $93.2 million drought-assistance funding in next week's budget.

Surging demand from farmers looking to access the government's low-interest loans to help install or upgrade on-farm infrastructure had prompted a $30 million increase in funding allocation, Treasurer Gladys Berejiklian said.

The Farm Innovation Fund will get $80 million of the 2016-17 budget allocation for the NSW Drought Strategy.

The budget commitment also includes $9 million for vocational training and business planning to help farmers prepare for future droughts, as well as money to upgrade weather forecasting and stock and fodder transport assistance.

"It is important for everyone across the state to experience the benefits of a strong budget, and our farmers deserve our support as they are a crucial part of our rural and regional economies," Ms Berejiklian said on Thursday.
