Fruit hampers hits $30,000 at charity sale

Bidders have driven summer fruit prices through the roof at a Sydney charity auction, with a syndicate forking out $30,000 for peaches, mangoes, cherries and plums - with the money going to charity.

Fifteen baskets went under the hammer at the first Summer Fruit Auction at Sydney Markets on Wednesday morning.

A syndicate walked away with the full delicious prize, with the funds going to Save Our Sons foundation aimed at finding a cure for Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Nick Martelli the Committee Chair of the auction and also one of the winning group, said nearly 300 people turned out for the event.

"It was just like a carnival atmosphere," Mr Martelli said.

Although in its first year, Mr Martelli hopes the charity auction will be able to expand next year.
