Farm deaths in water tanks: How and why?

THE DANGERS OF WATER TANKS:

* High concentrations of carbon or CO2 poisoning from a tank's pump or motor engine

* Drownings especially involving young children

* Contaminated water leading to water-borne illnesses such as legionella

* Poisoning caused by paint coatings or acidic rainwater from underground pipes

* Greater risk of contracting dengue virus with mosquitoes breeding in tanks

SAFETY RECOMMENDATIONS:

* Place pump or engine equipment as far away from the tank as possible to avoid gas build-up

* Make sure there's adequate ventilation and another person is with you when cleaning a tank

* Use cleaning products that don't release hazardous fumes or affect water

* Regularly clean gutters and tank

* Make sure children can't access the tank roof

* Keep roof catchments secure and clear of overhanging vegetation to block small animals or birds getting in

* Make sure pipework is protected from contamination hazards

* Don't collect rainwater and primers from roofs painted with products containing high lead concentrations
