Ex-teacher bailed after allegedly asking student to lie to police about abuse

A former teacher thrown behind bars for allegedly asking her teen victim to lie to police about claimed sexual abuse has been granted bail.

Karly Renae Rae is accused of grooming and having sexual intercourse with a 15-year-old boy who was a student at her school.

Arrested in October over the alleged crimes, the 36-year-old is also facing one charge of possessing child abuse material.

Initially granted bail, Rae was placed back on remand in January after allegedly calling the teenage boy five times over two-and-a-half hours, trying to get him to change his story.

"In the course of those calls, it's alleged (Rae) sought to persuade the complainant to give a false version of events," Justice Hament Dhanji said during a NSW Supreme Court bail hearing today.

Instead of agreeing, the teen told his mother what had happened before going to the police.

The 36-year-old was hit with additional charges of trying to pervert the course of justice and breaching an apprehended violence order imposed to protect the teen.

Rae watched the hearing from a cell at Dillwynia prison in Sydney's northwest.

She appeared visibly upset, crying at some points while Justice Dhanji granted her bail.

The judge acknowledged concerns raised by crown solicitor Lucas Velcic that the former teacher posed a risk of committing further offences or interfering with witnesses.

However, he said these risks were not so unacceptable that she should remain on remand.

No longer able to work as a teacher, it was highly improbable Rae would try to engage in sexual activity with a child, Justice Dhanji said.

Her alleged bid to persuade the teen to give a false version of events had failed and resulted in her spending four months behind bars.

"That will have brought home to her the folly in making any further attempt," he said.

He also took into account personal matters which cannot be reported for legal reasons.

While on bail, she will remain in home detention at her Bolton Point home on the NSW Central Coast.

She cannot be in the company of any person aged 16 or under, is barred from using social media, and is only to possess one mobile phone.

Rae will be arraigned at Newcastle District Court on July 3, when the matter is expected to go to trial.
