Ex-Catholic brother faces more charges

An 84-year-old former Catholic brother and a 78-year-old former priest have been charged over alleged indecent assaults against boys in the Hunter region.

The former brother, who is already in prison convicted of previous offences, was charged by police on Monday with another 14 historical aggravated indecent assault offences, police announced on Wednesday.

The charges relate to alleged assaults against the boys at a Hamilton school between 1971 and 1974.

The 78-year-old former priest was charged on Wednesday following an investigation into alleged assaults against three boys at a Merewether school in the 1970s and a Cessnock school in the late 1980s.

He is charged with three counts of indecently assaulting a male, two counts of sexual assaulting a person under 16, and attempted sexual intercourse with a child aged between 10 and 16.

Both men are due to face Newcastle Local Court on April 27.
