Sydney KFC worker hailed hero after 'hiding' staff during robbery

A young KFC worker has been hailed as a hero, after she tried to protect other employees during an attempted armed robbery in Sydney's west last night.

Two men armed with a meat cleaver and a machete entered the St Clair takeaway shop just before 9.30pm, and demanded money from a female employee before hitting her.

A 15-year-old employee, Michelle Ereck, has told 9NEWS she helped other teenage staff hide in the freezer and locked them inside in an effort to protect them from the would-be thieves.

"I actually took all the 15-year-olds.. and I was like let's go to safety guys, let's go lock ourselves in the freezer... let's call the police, let's call the ambulance," Michelle said. 

"They were distraught and crying, shocked."

Both armed men left the Banks Drive shop scene empty-handed and were last seen running along St Clair Avenue.

The injured employee was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to Nepean Hospital for treatment for a minor head wound.

Both men were described as being of thin to medium build and were wearing dark clothing.

Police investigations are continuing.
