A 21-year-old's Australia Day joyride on a petrol-powered Esky was cut short after police charged the Camden man with high range drink-driving.

Crowds were cheering as James Wallace drove his mate's little vehicle up and down the town's bustling Argyle St as revellers celebrated the close of Australia Day shortly after 7:30pm.

Cheers quickly turned to shouts of anger after the 21-year-old's wild 20km/h ride was stifled by the law as police stopped him near a pedestrian crossing, the Macarthur Chronicle Camden reports.

The Esky was deemed fit for classification as a motor vehicle and police issued a breath test.

Mr Wallace blew 0.162, almost three times the legal limit.

Video of the 21-year-old's joyride was posted online by staff at the Camden Hotel and has garnered almost 49,000 views.

The Camden man will face Picton Local Court on February 28.
