Doctor convicted over child sex material

A former Sydney doctor who was caught with steroids, cocaine and child abuse material has been placed on a two-year good behaviour bond.

The 32-year-old, who can only be referred to as Dr X, had his Sydney home searched by police in September last year after a tip-off to police.

Inside they found testosterone, bags of cocaine and images and videos of children on his computer.

During sentencing on Wednesday, Dr X's barrister Philip Strickland SC asked Magistrate Mark Buscombe not to record a conviction against the trainee surgeon in relation to the possession of the child abuse material.

A conviction, he said, would destroy his ambitions to do intensive care training because he would not be allowed to work with children in pediatrics.

But although Mr Buscombe agreed the 16 images and six videos of the children were on the lower end of the scale, he found the seriousness of the offences warranted a conviction.

"The exploitation of children for sexual purposes is abhorrent," he said.

While there was no evidence of Dr X searching for and downloading the abuse material online, Mr Buscombe said he was satisfied he knew they were on his computer, as folders had been modified and edited over time.

Like the drugs, Dr X had kept the videos and images for his personal use, he said.

He gave him a two-year good behaviour bond with no conviction recorded for possessing the testosterone and the 6.8 grams of cocaine.

However, he convicted him and fined him $4000 for possessing the child abuse material.
