A Sydney man suspended from driving until 2042 has been charged after allegedly speeding away from police in an uninsured vehicle.

The 33-year-old was allegedly caught driving through a 60km/h zone in inner west Rozelle at 86km/h on Friday morning but when police tried to stop him, he accelerated up to 100km/h.

Officers later apprehended the man when he was stuck in traffic and charged him with speeding, using an unregistered and uninsured vehicle, and driving while disqualified.

The man was due before Parramatta Local Court on Saturday.

He was arrested as part of Operation Safe Return that is running during the long weekend.

More than 1000 drivers were caught speeding on Friday, 24 per cent more than on the first day of the operation last year.
