'Death ship' inquest to continue in Sydney

A coronial inquest is to continue into the so-called "death ship" Sage Sagittarius where the vessel's chief cook vanished overboard.

A court heard on Tuesday from a crew member that he feared for his life after Filipino chief cook Caesar Llanto disappeared from the Japanese coal-ferrying ship while approached Australian waters off the coast of Cairns on August 30, 2012.

A crew member, who cannot be named, told inquest into Mr Llanto's death that he believes the cook's disappearance was neither an unfortunate event nor a suicide.

"I don't believe he accidentally fell overboard," he told Glebe Coroner's Court on Tuesday.

Instead, the crew member thinks the ship's captain, Venancio Salas Jr, could be behind the death.

The inquest will continue on Wednesday.
