The effects of Cyclone Winston are expected to hit the Australian seaboard this weekend, causing dangerous swells along the NSW coast.

Volunteer lifesavers are preparing for a busy weekend with waves up to three metres expected on Saturday.

Swimmers, surfers, rockfishers and recreational boaters are being warned to take extra care from Friday when swells start to rise.

"We're anticipating the swell to be quite powerful his weekend, so please if you have any doubt about your ability to handle the conditions it is best not to go out," NSW Lifesaving manager Andy Kent said.

Beach closures would be determined by lifesavers on the day, he said.

Cyclone Winston devastated Fiji when it hit with 325km/h winds last weekend.

The official death toll sits at 42.
