THE TRAIL OF DESTRUCTION CAUSED BY CYCLONE DEBBIE:

March 28 - The eye of Cyclone Debbie hits the Whitsunday Islands off the north Queensland coast.

March 29 - Debbie downgraded to the weakest category from an original category four.

March 30 - NSW residents start to feel the remnants of the ex-tropical cyclone with heavy rains and thunderstorms lashing the state's northeast.

March 31 - About 6000 people are evacuated in northern NSW with 20,000 residents affected by flooding.

A woman's body is found on a flooded property at Upper Burringbar some 20 kilometres south of Murwillumbah.

A second woman is found dead after the car she was in was swept away in the NSW Hunter region.

A 46-year-old man dies in Murwillumbah from a heart attack during the floods.

April 1 - Ballina, Byron, Kyogle, Lismore, Richmand Valley and Tweed local government areas are declared natural disaster zones.

A man in his 40s is discovered dead in a caravan at a Murwillumbah caravan park.

April 2 - Floodwaters start to subside in northern NSW while Ballina, Coraki, Woodburn, Cabbage Tree Island, and Wardell remain on alert.

Northern NSW flood victims return to their homes.

April 3 - Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian visit flood-affected Lismore.

April 4 - Police retrieve the bodies of a mother and two children who were swept into the Tweed River in northern NSW after a third child miraculously escaped.

The death toll from the NSW floods rises to six.

April 11 - The last homes and businesses in Queensland's Whitsunday region finally have power restored.

April 12 - The search continues for two Queensland men who went missing when the state was hit by Cyclone Debbie.
