Cunneen steps back from trial

Crown prosecutor Margaret Cunneen SC has stepped down from an ongoing murder trial in Sydney.

Presiding Justice Richard Button told a Supreme Court jury sitting at Darlinghurst on Thursday it was not unusual for barristers to withdraw from proceedings.

"You can see that a new crown prosecutor has been briefed to appear for the crown in the trial," Justice Button said.

Justice Button told the jury changing prosecutors should not lead them to draw "the slightest adverse inference" towards either the prosecution or the defence.

It comes after NSW's corruption watchdog announced on Wednesday it had handed evidence gathered during its ill-fated investigation into Ms Cunneen to her employer, the DPP, for consideration of charges.
