Cops under review after taking driver’s keys as he grabbed a coffee
A group of NSW officers are under review after removing the keys from a driver’s unattended car while he was inside a café buying a coffee.
The video shows the moment a man leaves his ute unattended with the keys still in the ignition to grab a coffee before a group of police sitting outside the Sydney café emerge and grab his keys.
The police in the video are now under review. Supplied
The man appears to step outside shortly after, looking for his keys, with the police seen laughing. They speak to the man shortly after returning them to him.
In the end, around seven police officers were talking to this man, continuing to speak to him as he intended to drive off.
The cops’ actions have sparking debate over whether they were enforcing the law or taking things too far.
NSW laws state that you can receive a $114 fine if you walk three metres away from your car with the keys in the ignition.
The police involved in the incident reportedly remain under review, with some placed on alternate duties.
