Construction company fined over 2013 blast

A Sydney construction company has been fined $240,000 for a petrol storage tank explosion that damaged several buildings nearly three years ago.

The blast at the Eastwood site occurred in July 2013 when an unqualified contractor, hired by Brilliant Along Developments, dragged one of three tanks earmarked for removal out of the ground with an excavator, a SafeWork NSW investigation found.

The company was fined for failing to ensure safety and provide notice of their planned demolition work, which could have had "near-disastrous consequences", SafeWork NSW executive director Peter Dunphy said in a statement on Monday.
