Teacher fine before disappearance: friend

The only thing Sharon Edwards was concerned about when she saw her friends at tennis five days ago was being "hot and bothered" after a hard match.

And it's this absence of any aired grievances that makes her mysterious disappearance harder to understand.

"She was just hot and bothered after playing a hard afternoon game," Phil Beckman, who plays tennis with the mother of three boys, said.

"I just don't know what's going on."

Ms Edwards hasn't been seen since she was at the Good Intent Hotel in Grafton on Saturday night.

The much-loved teacher was then reported missing on Tuesday after she failed to turn up to work at Coutts Crossing Public School.

Since then forensics officers have combed through two properties - believed to be the Grafton home she shares with her husband and the Lawrence property she used to reside at.

Ms Edwards' car was reportedly found in the driveway of her Grafton home.

Mr Beckman said Ms Edwards and her husband moved to Grafton more than a year ago but still owned the Lawrence farm.

He wasn't aware the couple had separated but police were on Thursday referring to Ms Edwards' husband as estranged.

Acting Superintendent Darren Jameson said the husband had spoken with police and been very co-operative.

On Saturday afternoon Ms Edwards spent time chatting with fellow players at the Grafton City Tennis Club before going to meet friends at the local pub, where she was last seen between 10pm and 11pm.

Mr Beckman said he had since been interviewed by detectives about Ms Edwards' movement at the club.

Nothing seemed untoward with her that afternoon, he said.

"We are just shocked," he said.

Police say her disappearance is under "extremely suspicious circumstances".

Detectives have been speaking to friends, neighbours and relatives and trawling through her bank records.

They aren't ruling anything in or out, Supt Jameson said.

"She has disappeared. That disappearance is in unexplained circumstances," he said.

The popular school teacher's mysterious disappearance prompted an outpouring of concern from friends and parents on social media.

"This is heartbreaking news, she's been my girl's teacher for the past few years," Suzie Williams wrote on Facebook.

"I hope she's found soon, safe and ok."

Laura O'Neill wrote: "She was one of my teachers at Coutts Crossing Public. Hoping for the best."

A strike force of detectives has been set up to investigate Ms Edwards' disappearance.
