All lanes of M5 East open after crash causes traffic chaos across Sydney

All lanes of Sydney's M5 East have re-opened after a multi-vehicle crash triggered major delays across Sydney’s south during peak hour.

The highway was closed westbound from 4.30pm as a result of the crash at Kingsgrove, causing congestion to stretch more than seven kilometres eastbound.

All westbound and eastbound lanes of the M5 East are now open, Transport NSW said about 7.30pm.

"The vehicles involved in the crash have been towed away, and initial repairs have been carried out to the concrete barriers in the centre of the motorway," Transport NSW announced. 

"Diversions for westbound motorists have been lifted, but traffic is still heavy back to Eastlakes."

Due to heavy traffic in the area, buses through Arncliffe, Bexley, Kingsgrove and Mascot are delayed up to 65 minutes.
