Christmas crackdown on drivers: cops

Cops are cracking down on NSW motorists who decide to get behind the wheel after too much Christmas cheer.

Those caught drink-driving over the festive season will be charged and face court, with motorists who record a mid or high-range during a Random Breath Testing losing their licence on the spot, police said on Wednesday.

It's part of RBT procedures that are being rolled out across the state.

Police say drink-driving has made up 14 per cent of this year's NSW roads deaths, with 53 dead and more than 560 injured in serious crashes where booze was a factor.

Superintendent Stuart Smith said it is simply not worth the risk to drink and drive.

"You will be caught or worse still, end up killing yourself or a loved one," Supt Smith said.

The operation, Safe Arrival, launched last Friday and continues to January 2.

The overall number of NSW road deaths is up 35 from this time last year with a record high of 372 deaths.
